From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-klum (“sweet”) (Schuessler, 2007; STEDT). Cognate with Mizo thlum, Lepcha [script needed] (khlyam).
Possibly related to 甜 (OC *l'iːm, “sweet”) and 柑 (OC *kaːm, “mandarin orange”) (Schuessler, 2007).
