Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *sŋreːnʔ) : abbreviated phonetic 彥 (OC *ŋrans) + semantic 生 (“to be born”).
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sryal (“to breed; to bring up”), whence Tibetan སྲེལ་བ (srel ba, “to bring up; to rear”).
Schuessler (2007) notes 產 (OC *sŋreːnʔ) is equally likely to have been Austroasiatic in origin. Compare Khmer សំរាល (sɑmraal, “to give birth”).
