Many names were proposed by ZA Terminoloģijas komisija, including, VIDS - virāla imūndeficīta sindroms, sarglaupe, imūnkaile, imūnkailums, imunokaile, imunokailums, AIS - antimūnsindroms, antimūns, bezimunitāte, bezimunitātes slimība, bezimūnkaite, imizorgs - "imunitātes izzudums organismā," imūndeficīts, imunitātes grāvējs, imunitātes zude, imūnkaite, imunozude, imūntrūce, imūnzude, mērlis, nonimuna, sargzude, limfšūngande or shorter gande. Eventually AIDS, a declinable form aidss and mērlis (as an "emotionally captivating" alternative) were officially approved for use by Terminoloģijas komisija. Only the acronym is currently in use. In Latvian AIDS is first attested in print in October 1986.[1]
