Etymology

From Old Catalan tànyer, itself from Latin tangō, tangere (touch), and influenced by the derivative pertingere (stretch out, extend, arrive, reach, obtain) and by pertinēre, present active infinitive of pertineō (pertain), which gave Old Catalan pertenir (eventually being replaced by pertànyer).[1]
