Inherited from Proto-Slavic *mati, from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr. Doublet of macierz (matrix), maciora (female pig), and mutra (nut for a bolt). mać comes from leveling to the nominative stem, macierz and maciora from leveling to the two oblique stems, and mutra was borrowed from German.
