From Old Norse hóta, derived from the noun hót n pl (“threat”) (cf. Swedish hot). It has replaced an older (now obsolete) verb, höta, from Old Norse hœta, from Proto-Germanic *hwōtijaną, cognate with Danish høde (archaic), Gothic 𐍈𐍉𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ƕōtjan).
