Uncertain. There are some hypotheses:

  1. Probably shares the same sources with Middle Iranian *sōx,[1] whence Old Armenian սոխ (sox) and Persian سوخ (sôx).
  2. Borrowed from Sanskrit सुकन्द (sukanda), from सु (su) + कन्द (kanda)[2].
