Lau was elected the President of the Student Union of Hong Kong Shue Yan University in 2017.[1] He became a member of the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) in 2018, and chaired the Protestors' Relief Fund of HKFS for two years.[2][3]

In 2020 Lau, a localist, joined the pro-democracy primaries. During the debate of primaries Lau frequently clashed with moderate lawmaker Helena Wong, even questioned if Wong knows how to sing "Glory to Hong Kong", the iconic protest song.[4] Eventually both Lau and Wong were defeated and unable to secure the nomination.

Lau was arrested a year later and charged with subversion,[5] remanded in custody as of now after bail denied.[6]
