Effect

Generation I

Sing puts the target to sleep. In the handheld games only, Sing can affect a target behind a substitute.

Generations II-V

Sing can no longer affect a target behind a substitute.

Pokémon with Insomnia, Vital Spirit or Soundproof as their Ability are unaffected by Sing.

Sing can also be used as part of a Pokémon Contest combination causing Perish Song and Refresh to have their base appeal points doubled if used in the next turn.

Generation VI onward

Sing can once again affect a target behind a substitute. Pokémon under the effect of Sweet Veil are unaffected by Sing.

Sing will become a Water-type move when used by a Pokémon with the Ability Liquid Voice. If the user is affected by Throat Chop, it will be unable to use this move for two turns.

If the user is holding a Throat Spray, the item will be consumed and the user's Special Attack stat will be raised by one stage.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Sing, the user's Speed stat is raised by one stage, and the user can use this move regardless of whether the user is affected by Throat Chop or not.

Sing can be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Dream Eater, Hex, Nightmare and Wake-Up Slap) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.
