The surface the print is created on as part of the build platform.

The build surface is the surface that is in contact with the deposition of the molten filament in FFF. In SLA this is the film the first layer sticks too.

A typical layout for a build platform for e.g. a Prusa i3 style printer can be seen in the image below.
