Questions tagged [belt]

Use this tag for questions that relate to mechanical motion of a loop or a strip of material that induces rotation of multiple shafts.

To print material in multiple dimensions it is required to mechanically move certain parts like e.g. carriages. The rotational motion of a stepper, servo or an electrical motor needs to be transferred to that carriage. Belts (e.g. timing belts) are used to transmit the power.

Belt Tensioning

I have printed off some upgrades for my Anet A6 for tensioning the belt on the Y and X axis. I was wondering how much deflection the belt should have. I would think being to tight will stress the machine.

Herringbone timing belt?

I realized while playing around with 3D printed gears that it would be easy to make a 3D printed herringbone-style timing belt and matching gears/pulleys. Would such a design have any advantages over typical GT2 timing belts used in 3D printers? I…

Proper belt tension for Ender 3 v2

The Y-axis belt just broke on my Ender 3 v2. I believe that it was over tensioned from the factory. When I initially assembled the printer, I noticed that the Y-axis tensioner was tightened almost all the way. The belt itself felt very stiff. The…

Looking for information on modifying Boots Industries 3D printers

About two years ago I purchased a Boots Industries v.2.5 3D printer in a delta configuration. The wiki is still up at this location where you can see what the printer looked like. The printer is prone to break and slip because the design uses thin…

Knotted String as Replacement for Toothed Belt

I'm at a location where I don't have easy access to toothed belts for my printer (a RepRap Wallace). While trying to look for some solution, I saw some talk of using fishing line as a belt, along with a log of admonitions of Don't. However, as I…

Is it normal for belt tension to differ between sides of a CoreXY printer?

When I pluck the belts of my CoreXY printer, I feel significantly different tension between the two idlers on the back and the tension on the sides, between the gear on the stepper shaft and the idler on the back. Is this normal? If not, what could…
