English

WOTD – 13 February 2023

Etymology

Two podcasters about to record an episode of a podcast (sense 1).

Blend of iPod (portable music player made by Apple) + broadcast,[1] probably coined by the British technologist and broadcaster Ben Hammersley (born 1976) who proposed the word podcasting in 2004.[2]

Pronunciation

  • (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /ˈpɒdkɑːst/, /-kæst/
  • (file)
  • (General American) IPA(key): /ˈpɑdˌkæst/, /ˈpɔd-/
  • Rhymes: (RP) -ɒdkɑːst, (RP) -ɒdkæst, (GA) -ɑdkæst, (GA) -ɔdkæst
  • Hyphenation: pod‧cast

Noun

podcast (plural podcasts)

  1. A programme, especially an audio programme, produced on a regular basis, delivered over the Internet in a compressed digital format and designed for playback on computers or portable devices such as mobile phones. [from early 21st c.]
    Synonym: blogcast
    • 2007, Andy [J. Williams] Affleck, “Plan Your Podcast”, in Take Control of Podcasting on the Mac, Berkeley, Calif.: Peachpit Press, →ISBN; republished in “Plan Your Podcast”, in Take Control of Podcasting (1.0), San Diego, Calif.: Alt Concepts, 2020, →ISBN:
There's no restriction for what a podcast should and should not be. Of course, if you cover all these topics and more, you may find it harder to find an audience than if you focus on a narrower range and cover it well. Finding listeners is simpler if your podcast can be summarized in a sentence. More people will sample your show if it fits in a category in a podcast directory—like that found in the iTunes Store—than if it ends up lumped in a generic catch-all list.
    • 2016, Matthew Anniss, Create Your Own Podcast, Capstone, →ISBN, page 20:
Try listening to a mix of well-known podcasts. You'll soon find that the best always feature hosts that have their own unique voice.
  2. (loosely) An individual episode of such a programme.

Usage notes

In precise usage, the term podcast refers to the programme itself, whereas each individual audio recording is referred to as an episode; in broad usage, metonymy blurs this distinction (as it also does with analogous terms such as broadcast and television show).

With the benefit of hindsight, it all seems quite obvious. MP3 players, like Apple's iPod, in many pockets, audio production software cheap or free, and weblogging an established part of the internet; all the ingredients are there for a new boom in amateur radio. But what to call it? Audioblogging? Podcasting? GuerillaMedia?
