From Proto-Finnic *olut, borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?], compare Latvian alus (“beer, ale”), or alternatively from Proto-Germanic *alu (stem *aluþ-), whose cognates include Swedish öl. Akin to kalja, an early borrowing from an Indo-European language.
