halë
Albanian
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /haːl/
Etymology 1
From the development of the sense “splinter, pointed tip, awn” to “pine needles” (see Etymology 2 below) and then narrowed to the specific tree name.[1] For the semantic development, compare Icelandic barr (“pine needles”) from Proto-Germanic *baraz (“(awn of) barley”).
Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂élsnos (“alder”) (compare Lithuanian al̃ksnis, Latin alnus), derivative of *h₂élis- (compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian jelha, Dutch els). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
