deinetwegen

German

Alternative forms

  • deinet wegen (also occuring in von deinet wegen, um deinet wegen) (proscribed, obsolete)

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdaɪ̯nətˌveːɡən/, /ˌdaɪ̯nətˈveːɡən/
  • (file)

Adverb

deinetwegen

  1. because of you (2nd person singular), for your sake
    Das ist alles deinetwegen passiert.
All of this happened because of you.
  2. as far as you (2nd person singular) are concerned (you don't mind if); for all you care
    Deinetwegen kann ich mitkommen?
As far as you are concerned, I can come with you?

Usage notes

Colloquially, this term is usually constructed with the separated form in the dative (especially in the southern language area), thus wegen dir instead of deinetwegen. In sense 2, however, both are equally common in the vernacular.
