Inherited from Old Polish bawić, from Proto-Slavic *bàviti (to linger), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *bāwˀitei?, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰowH-éye-ti, causative of *bʰuH- (to become). Cognate to Sanskrit भावयति (bhāváyati).
