Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *ahava, of unknown further origin. Appears to be analyzable as containing the adjectival/participle suffix -va, but no root word *aha is known. First attested in Daniel Juslenius: Suomalaisen Sana-Lugun Coetus ("Attempt at Listing Finnish Words", 1745).[1] Cognates include Karelian ahava, Votic ahavõ, Veps ahau and dialectal Estonian ahav.
