English

Etymology

From Russian узбек (uzbek), from Uzbek oʻzbek. First element probably from Turkic öz (genuine), second from either Old Turkic 𐰋𐰏 (beg, ruler) or Sogdian [script needed] (βγ /beġ/, master); the latter from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰagás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰagás (beg may be borrowed from *bʰagás, see bey). The first element is often thought to be equivalent to English Oghuz.
