From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kude, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷú-dʰe, from *kʷos, *kʷis.
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian kur̃ (“where”).
Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit कुह (kúha, “where”), कुत्र (kútra, “where”), Latin necubi (“lest somewhere”), Avestan 𐬐𐬎𐬛𐬁 (kudā, “where”), 𐬐𐬏 (kū, “where”), Cretan Greek ὀπυι (ὀpyi, “whither”), Albanian ku (“where”).
