Etymology

Of unclear origin. The suffix -ova is probably of Slavic origin. Theories about the first element:

  • It is possibly ultimately from Gothic 𐌼𐌿𐌻𐌳𐌰 (mulda, dust, mud) (possibly Moldavia); compare the river Mulde in Germany and Moldau, the German name of the river Vltava, which may be of related origin.
  • Alternatively, it may be related to Romanian molid (spruce), though the loss of the i in this word is difficult to explain.
  • A folk etymology, according to Dimitrie Cantemir, says the name of the Moldova River comes from Prince Dragoș, after his hound Molda, who drowned in it while attempting to hunt an aurochs.
  • The Romanian people may have called themselves "Moldoveni" or "Munteni" (literally "of the mountains") so Moldova may alternatively derive from a Thracian-Illyrian language, from *mol (mountain) + *dava (town).[1]
