Kurdistan
English
Etymology
From a regional language like Northern Kurdish Kurdistan or Persian کردستان (Kordestân), equivalent to Kurd + -i- + -stan.
Proper noun
Kurdistan
- A region in the Middle East inhabited mostly by the Kurds. It encompasses parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
- An autonomous region of northern and northeastern Iraq lying within the aforementioned Kurdish-majority region.
- A province in northwestern Iran lying within the aforementioned Kurdish-majority region.
Usage notes
Although parts of northeastern Iran and central-western Turkey also have a majority-Kurdish population, these areas are generally not considered to be part of Kurdistan, the term being reserved for the main contiguous Kurdish-majority area where Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria meet.
