Learned borrowing from Pali buddha (“awakened, enlightened”), Pali Buddha (“the Buddha”), from Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha, “awakened, enlightened”), past participle of बोधति (bodhati, “to wake”). Distantly related to English bid and bede. Also cognate with Russian будить (buditʹ, “to wake up”).
