Possibly an Austronesian loan, since this kind of axe has been discovered in archaeological sites in areas where Austronesian languages were once spoken; compare Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *wasay (“axe”) (Mahdi, 1994; Schuessler, 2007). Also compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *wac (“knife; sword”), Old Mon rwas (“weapon”) (Schuessler, 2007).
