Timed Research

A Timed Research (Japanese: タイムチャレンジ Time Challenge) is a set of tasks assigned in Pokémon GO that has a specific time period during which it may be completed. The format for Timed Research is nearly identical to that of Special Research, except for the given deadline. In addition, Timed Researches are instead accessed through the "Today" tab of the Research view and do not include dialogue with Professor Willow. If completed, a Timed Research is listed in the "Special" tab alongside the completed Special Researches.

Throwback Challenge 2020

These sets of Timed Research were available in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic with matching in-game event for the duration of each challenge. During those events, Pokémon spawns on the world map as well those appearing in Raid Battle or given as Field Researches rewards were adjusted to Pokémon originating from the specific region of each challenge. Players who completed all 4 Time Researches gained access to Special Research Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 in June 2020.

Throwback Challenge 2020: Kanto

Throwback Challenge 2020: Kanto was a time-limited set of research tasks that ran from May 1, 2020, 1 p.m. until May 8, 2020, at 1 p.m. local time. This challenge was unwittingly released on April 27, 2020, to some players and was subsequently removed from the game[1]. It is a nine-part challenge that runs for a limited period of time and gives various Kanto Pokémon for rewards, including Mewtwo with Psystrike as a final reward.

Throwback Challenge 2020: Johto was a time-limited set of research tasks that ran from May 8, 2020, 1 p.m. until May 15, 2020, at 1 p.m. local time. It was released early to players before the official starting time.[2] It is a nine-part challenge that runs for a limited period of time and gives various Johto Pokémon for rewards as well, including Ho-Oh with Earthquake as a final reward.

This Timed Research was available from July 31, 2020, from 1 p.m. PDT to August 07, 2020, at 1 p.m. PDT. Due to a bug, it expired earlier at 1 p.m. local time in some countries instead. This research was unlocked globally to all trainers by players who could complete 8 challenges during Pokémon GO Fest 2020, Day 1. Trainers who did not purchase a GO Fest 2020 could access this Timed Research regardless. The original Time Research focuses on Dragon-type Pokémon.

Due to the early expiration bug, this Timed Research was made available again with altered task steps requirements from August 21, 2020, 8 a.m. to August 26, 2020, 10 p.m. local time as part of the Dragon Week makeup event. Trainers who had already completed the Timed Research during its original run could do it again during this makeup event. Once completed, this second version of Ultra Unlock 2020 is displayed under a separate entry in the "Special" tab.
