13th century. From Old Galician and Old Portuguese vermello, from Vulgar Latin vermiculus (purple, red), attested as a color in the writings of Isidore of Seville, from Latin vermiculus (little worm), similar to coccinus (purple). Compare Portuguese vermelho.
