From Proto-Finnic *uuci, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *wuďe. Cognates include Estonian uus, Northern Sami ođas, Komi-Zyrian выль (vylʹ), Erzya and Moksha од (od) and Hungarian új. The vowel was irregularly lengthened possibly as a result of the lost initial *w-.
