stue

Danish

Etymology

From Old Norse stofa, cognate with English stove and German Stube. There is a similar word in Romance: French étuve, Old French estuve, Medieval Latin stupha. This word may be a loan from Proto-Germanic *stubō (heated room), but the Germanic word may also be an early loan from Vulgar Latin *extūfa, derived from a verb *extūfō (hence Italian stufare (to stew)), a compound of ex- and Ancient Greek τῦφος (tûphos, steem).
