From Latin sinistrum (“left”), through a Vulgar Latin form *sinexter, sinextrum, from contamination with dexter (“right”, whence Italian destro).[1] Compare also Portuguese sestro, Spanish siniestro, Old French senestre, Old Catalan sinestre.
