Of uncertain origin, perhaps from a Turkic language -m (“nominal suffix”). For the root, compare Chagatai čavli (“young hawk; sparrow hawk”), Ottoman Turkish çavlı (“falcon”). For the -m suffix, compare alom, orom.[1]
