pieli

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *peeli, from Proto-Uralic *päle (side). Cognates include Estonian peel, Erzya пель (pelʹ), Moksha пяль (pjalʹ) and Hungarian fél.[1] Compare also Hungarian ajtófél, its second element of which might originate from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pele, *pēle (column, stang)[2] (if not the same as the aforementioned root).
