Attested since circa 1750. From Old Galician and Old Portuguese *lendẽa, from a Vulgar Latin *lēndina or from *lēndinem, accusative of *lēndō or *lēndis, as a variant of classical Latin lēns, lēndem. Cognate with, among others, Portuguese lêndea and Spanish liendre.
