Etymology 1

Variant of lansi (low-lying land), possibly by backformation from dialectal lantea (fertile, of land). Semantic development has probably been through "fertile soil, material used as fertilizer". Attested since the early 18th century.

A connection has also been purported to Proto-Germanic *hlandą (urine).
