Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gody, plural of *godъ (proper time, holiday), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰedʰ- (to unite, be associated, suit), whence English gather and good. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic годъ (godŭ, pleasing time), Lithuanian guõdas (honor), Proto-Germanic *gōdaz (good), Proto-West Germanic *gadōn (to fit, hold together).
