Yoruba

Etymology 1

The etymology is unknown. This term seems restricted to the core Yoruba-language group of Yoruboid, with the other Yoruboid languages (Ede, Olukumi, and Itsekiri) having other terms for language. Many other Yoruba-dialects also have different terms for the language, see eréùn in Ijebu, thus suggesting this to be a newer innovation, from è- + , though no known root related to has an association with mouth, tongue, or speech
