Etymology

From West Germanic *ainawīg, from Northwest Germanic *ainawīgą, possibly dating to Proto-Germanic *ainawīgą. Cognate with Old High German einwīg, Old Norse einvígi (Icelandic einvígi, Swedish envig). Equivalent to ān- (solo) + wīġ (battle), so called because it was between single individuals, rather than groups or armies.
