Etymology
From Middle High German schemel, schamel, from Old High German scamal (Runic ᚲᛊᚨᛗᛖᛚᛚᚨ (ksamella)), from Latin scamellum, a variant of scabellum. Cognate with Old Saxon fōtscamel (“footstool”), Old English sċamol, Dutch schabel (“stool”), French escabelle, Italian sgabello.[1]
