Etymology

From Middle High German schemel, schamel, from Old High German scamal (Runic ᚲᛊᚨᛗᛖᛚᛚᚨ (ksamella)), from Latin scamellum, a variant of scabellum. Cognate with Old Saxon fōtscamel (footstool), Old English sċamol, Dutch schabel (stool), French escabelle, Italian sgabello.[1]
