Unknown, possibly akin to Latin crībrum (sieve, riddle), Proto-Germanic *hrīdrǭ (riddle), Proto-Celtic *kreitro- (sieve) (whence Old Irish críathar, Old Welsh cruitr), from Proto-Indo-European *krey- (to sift, to separate) + *-da.
