Etymology
- ESSJa: from *krojiti (“to cut”), with lengthening of the root vowel (Proto-Balto-Slavic *krāˀjаs and *krajīˀtei, respectively). Compare *tvarь f : *tvoriti, *gajь m : *gojiti.
- Derksen: from Proto-Indo-European *kroh₁(y)-, full-grade of the root *kreh₁(y)- (“to sieve, separate”), *krey- (“sieve”).
