Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unknown. Possibly an irregular reflex of Proto-Uralic *towe (lake), from which the shape **too would be predicted. The development *t > *s could have been motivated by avoidance of homonymy with the pronoun *too; but compare also *sulka (feather) < Proto-Uralic *tulka. Alternately, the word could be in some relationship to Proto-Samic *suońō (swamp), yet here the contraction to a monosyllable would be irregular.

Noun

*soo

  1. swamp, marsh, bog
