Borrowed from Frankish *blāu, from Proto-Germanic *blēwaz (“blue, gray”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlē-wo- (“yellow, grey, blue”), from *bʰel- (“to shine”). Eventually attested in early medieval Latin as blavus.
