Reconstruction:Latin/ando

This Latin entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Latin

Etymology

Uncertain. Several different etymologies have been proposed:

  • From *anditō, alteration of *ambitō, frequentative of ambiō (to pass around, encircle).
  • From *anditō, alteration of aditō, frequentative of adeō (to go to, approach).
  • Alteration of *amnō, assimilated from *amlō, from a Vulgar Latin form of ambulō (to travel, walk).
  • From annō (to swim to), possibly through frequentatives *annulō or *annitō

The relationship between this verb and Catalan and Occitan anar (to go) is uncertain.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈando/

Verb

*andō (present infinitive *andāre, perfect active *andāvī, supine *andātum); first conjugation

  1. to go.

Reconstruction notes

Italo-Romance and North Italian descendants are only partial, as they replace the stem with the one of vādō, vādere in stressed position.
