Etymology
(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) From Dutch Nieuw-Zeeland (“new Zeeland”) (nieuw calqued as new), after the Dutch settlement in Batavia, which in turn had been named after the Dutch province of Zeeland.
