English

Etymology

From Khmer ខ្មែរ (khmêr). Attributed to the Pali term khemara (one who is wholesome), from khema (tranquility), from Sanskrit क्षेम (kṣema), from Proto-Indo-European *tḱóy-mo-, from the root *tḱey- (to settle, to live). The elision form, ក្មេរ (kmera), is found in ancient stone inscriptions, or a borrowing from Northern Khmer เขมร (/khmɛːr/).
