Etymology
From Khmer ខ្មែរ (khmêr). Attributed to the Pali term khemara (“one who is wholesome”), from khema (“tranquility”), from Sanskrit क्षेम (kṣema), from Proto-Indo-European *tḱóy-mo-, from the root *tḱey- (“to settle, to live”). The elision form, ក្មេរ (kmera), is found in ancient stone inscriptions, or a borrowing from Northern Khmer เขมร (/khmɛːr/).
