Borrowed from Medieval Latin -izāre, from Ancient Greek -ίζειν (-ízein). Compare French -iser, Italian -izzare, Spanish and Portuguese -izar. Compare also the inherited suffix from Vulgar Latin in Catalan, -ejar.
