From Old Japanese. First cited to the Man'yōshu of circa 759 CE.[1] From Proto-Japonic *wasay.
Standalone form of wasa-, possibly from fusion of emphatic nominal particle い (i). Compare 雨 (ame, “rain”), from ama + i → ame, and 畑 (hatake, “dry field”), from *hataka + i → hatake.
