The skull of St Ambrose Barlow, one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, is preserved in a niche at the top of the main staircase.[3] He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Lancaster on 10 September 1641 after confessing to being a Catholic priest. According to legend, it is a screaming skull.[4] The story of it being a screaming skull was told to journalists after it was stolen from Wardley Hall in the 1930s. It worked as the skull was duly returned. It has since been removed occasionally from Wardley Hall by the Bishop of Salford and no unusual or paranormal activities have been reported. [5] [6]
Wardley Hall is the official residence of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Salford.
