History
Palace of Gathering Elegance was built in 1420 as a part of Inner Court's western palaces and named "Palace of Shouchang" (寿昌宫). In 1535, the Jiajing Emperor renamed the palace as "Palace of Gathering Elegance" .
In 1884, in order to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of the Empress Dowager Cixi, 630000 taels of silver were spent on a large-scale renovation of Palace of Gathering Elegance. The existing buildings are in the shape of those rebuilt in 1884.[1]
