Plot
This show is about a middle class girl, Kusum Deshmukh (Nausheen Ali Sardar), everyone in her family is dependent on her. She becomes engaged to Prakash Chitre (Prakash Ramchandani), but Prakash leaves her because she isn't willing to leave her family with their responsibilities. Kusum's parents, Vishwanath (S.K. Batra / Saurabh Dubey) and Sumitra (Savita Prabhune) are shattered. Then comes Nitin Kapoor (Nitin Trivedi), who asks Kusum's hand in marriage for his son, Abhay Kapoor (Anuj Saxena) . Kusum is shocked, but she meets him and puts forth a condition that she will take her family's responsibilities after their marriage also. Abhay agrees with her. Kusum is impressed with Abhay's progressive nature. They start meeting each other regularly and Kusum gradually starts falling for Abhay. He always gifts her something. They happily marry each other. On their wedding night, he shows his weird sparks. He just tells her that he really likes her and pretends to go to sleep. She is confused. Weird incidents happen with the chandelier, snake, fire etc. and Kusum does not understand anything. Abhay also is having commitments with other girls. He is a playboy.
Kusum finds out Abhay's truth but he always lies and saves himself. Kusum also finds out that Abhay only married her because she is Akhand Saubhagyavati (meaning a girl whose husband will not die). Kusum still stays because of Vishwanath and Sumitra's respect. Abhay's friend Aryaman Oberoi (Aashish Kaul) befriends with Kusum. Then later on, a girl named Esha Chopra (Shweta Kawatra) comes along. Esha and Kusum also become very good friends. But Esha starts liking Abhay, Abhay is also attracted to her, they get together, and have an extra-marital affair, Kusum consummates her marriage when Abhay comes to the Kapoor house intoxicated. Kusum becomes pregnant but Abhay says that the child is of Aryaman. Kusum slaps Esha and leaves the Kapoor house when she finds out about Abhay and Esha's affair. She is alone during her pregnancy stages. But Kusum comes to the Kapoor Industries because her "in-laws" call her. Kusum does not talk to Abhay. But due to some incidents, they become friends. Esha leaves because she thinks that Abhay is neglecting her and even Abhay realizes that he likes Kusum so he proposes Kusum again. Kusum and Abhay patch up with each other. But Kusum finds out that now Abhay cannot be a dad because of an accident that's why he called her back, because she is pregnant. Esha also comes back and befriends with Kusum again. But Kusum miscarries and holds Abhay responsible for the same. Kusum again decides to leave the Kapoor house but Sarala Nitin Kapoor (Rupa Divetia) insists Kusum to stay in so that Kusum does not leave the Kapoor house. Abhay is hurt by what Kusum said so Kusum apologizes to him. Kusum and Abhay are happy but then on Abhay's birthday Kusum goes to pick Abhay up from a farmhouse where Kusum hears Abhay saying that he still has to act in front of Kusum that he loves her. Kusum's phone rings and Abhay and Esha are scared that someone heard them. Then they see Kusum over there. Kusum goes away from there to the Kapoor house. Kusum waits for Abhay and when Abhay comes, Kusum slaps Abhay twice and leaves saying that she will never come back but Sarala stops Kusum. Sarala tells Abhay to get out. Abhay leaves the Kapoor house for sometime.
Meanwhile, there is a marriage proposal that comes to Tanya Kapoor (Ekta Sharma) who is Abhay's cousin sister. (The Kapoors love Kusum and hate Abhay) Kusum is supposed to do the set up of the pre-marriage but the groom Siddharth Kanwar (Sandeep Rajora) falls for Kusum instead of Tanya. Kusum marries him despite not wanting to because of some unwanted reasons. Siddharth's paternal aunts, Pamela (Bhumika Seth), Natasha "Tashu" Kanwar (Narayani Shastri), maternal aunt, Raima Talwar (Amita Chandekar), stepmother Reema Raman Kanwar (Prabha Sinha) and biological mother Devanshi Narang (Krutika Desai Khan / Unknown) are evil so they try to break Kusum and Siddharth's relation but they fail because Siddharth loves Kusum. Kusum also starts to love Siddharth. Natasha announces that she will marry none other than Abhay. Natasha and Abhay marry. Later, it is revealed that Abhay married Natasha so that he could get closer to Kusum (because Natasha is Siddharth's paternal aunt). Natasha is also interested in Abhay's wealth. Now, Abhay wants to create problems between Siddharth and Kusum but fails. Reema and Devanshi takes all of Siddharth's property so that Kusum and Siddharth are beggars. Siddharth and Kusum leave in a chawl. Kusum exposes Natasha and Abhay divorces Natasha. Natasha is kicked out of both Kapoor and Kanwar family. Later on, Abhay has brain tumor, and he changes for the good forever, and again due to a series of events, Kusum and Abhay become friends. Siddharth starts to suspect Kusum and Abhay and he questions Kusum about her character. Kusum is deeply hurt because of Siddharth. Kusum and Siddharth get divorced. Siddharth goes back to Reema and Devanshi. But Siddharth finds out that Kkusum was not lying about the brain tumor case so he calls her while driving. Siddharth crashes into Abhay's car and dies. Kusum is shattered.
A while later, everyone figures out that Abhay has brain tumor and then Sarala comes to Kusum for saving Abhay's life. Sarala wants Kusum to marry Abhay. After a lot of dragging, Kusum and Abhay marry and go to the United States Of America. Abhay is treated there and now he is completely cured of brain tumor. With the help of medical sciences, he can now become a father as well. One day, They meet Esha. They live with Esha. Abhay starts to fall for Kusum (for real this time) and Esha also starts liking Kkusum. But Kusum can not forget Siddharth. They go back, Esha comes back after sometime, Kusum starts to fall for Abhay again, they both do not tell each other about their feelings, Esha comes to live in with them and she too falls for Abhay despite knowing that he is married. She tries to get close to Abhay but fails. Kusum finally confesses to Abhay that she loves him and they consummate. Esha is shattered. Then everyone finds out that Abhay accidentally killed Siddharth when he was having brain tumor attack while driving. For a while, Kusum is mad at Abhay but later realizes that it was not Abhay's fault at all. Kusum still forgives him. Then Kusum and Abhay find out about Esha's truth and Abhay kicks Esha out. Kusum becomes pregnant but miscarries again. Esha tells the doctors to declare Kusum barren. When everyone wants an heir that Kusum cannot give, Kusum gets a surrogate mother Mahi (Poonam Narula), who also falls for Abhay. Mahi creates such situations that Kusum suspects Mahi and Abhay. Kusum leaves without interrogating. But on the train Kusum finds out that she is pregnant. Kusum goes to tell Abhay but mistakenly assumes that Mahi and Abhay are sharing a bed. She leaves for Ludhiana. But Kusum's train crashes and Kusum is presumed dead. Mahi gives birth to her daughter with Abhay, Kali (via surrogacy) and Kusum gives birth to a slightly younger girl, Kumud.
Twenty years later
Kusum (Nausheen Ali Sardar) lives in Ludhiana with Kumud Kapoor (Aashka Goradia), Sumitra (Savita Prabhune) and her family-like neighbour Madhuri ( Alpana Buch) and Kumud's friend Simran (Jennifer Winget). Kumud secures a scholarship to study in a famous University of Mumbai. Kusum does not allow Kumud to go to Mumbai but later agrees with Kumud as Kusum does not want to take any chance with Kumud's career. Kumud always has hated Abhay. Kumud comes to Mumbai along with Simran for the scholarship. Kali Kapoor (Rucha Gujarathi) is grown up to be a spoilt brat due to Mahi's evil teachings. Kali will go to any limit to fulfill her obsession. Kali also studies in the same university where Kumud has taken admission. Kali tries to rag Kumud and Simran but is left shameful by Kumud and Simran. Kali wreaks havoc in Kumud's life. Kali leaks exam papers, keeps drugs in Kumud's bag and accuses Kumud for all these crimes. But Kumud manages to prove herself innocent. So, Kali joins hands with her boyfriend Nakul Oberoi (Karanvir Bohra). Kali and Nakul accuse Kumud of molesting Nakul. In the courthouse, Kusum (who is now replaced by Manasi Joshi Roy) and Abhay meet each other as Nakul is the younger son of Abhay's best friend Aryaman. Still, they do not reunite as Mahi creates even more misunderstandings between them. Nakul is proven to be lying, so Abhay breaks the engagement. Kali is forced to get engaged to Advocate Garv Sachdev (Chetan Hansraj), Esha's Godson, who loves Kali, but she still loves Nakul. Kali still secretly meets Nakul. Soon, Garv finds out that Kali does not love him so he breaks the engagement. But soon Kali finds that Nakul is just after her wealth and she finds out that she genuinely loves Garv and not Nakul. Abhay finds out that Kumud is his daughter and Kali feels insecure. Kumud likes Kshitij Oberoi (Amit Sarin) who is Nakul's elder brother. Esha plans to avenge Kusum. She drugs Kumud. Kumud and Kshitij get intimate with each other under the effects of drugs. Kumud becomes pregnant with Kshitij's baby, but Kshitij finds out that he has cancer, so he pretends to hate Kumud. Kumud's friend Garv (who is also Kshitij's friend) tells her to forget Kshitij. She does so and marries Garv to get away from the society and also because he offered to help her. On Garv's and Kumud's wedding day, Kshitij finds out that he does not have cancer and that it was the conspiracy of Neelam (Anju Mahendru) and Nakul.
Kshitij goes to prove it to Kumud but is then proven guilty by Priya (Sumukhi Pendse), Garv's evil paternal aunt. Though being married, Kumud and Garv still stay as best friends rather than being a husband-wife couple. Kumud and Garv keep distance from each other. Kali tries to create misunderstandings between Kumud and Garv and Kali succeeds in that. Kali lies to Garv saying that she is pregnant with Garv's child, Garv marries Kali to take on the responsibility of his child. This comes in front of everyone. Kumud starts hating Garv to the core. Kumud and Garv get divorced. But after a lot of trials by Kali to get closer to him, Garv finds out Kali's truth that she is not pregnant at all. Kali and Garv get divorced. Kumud apologizes to Garv but he decides to move on as they are just best friends. He knows that Kumud's happiness is in Kshitij. So, Garv goes abroad. Meanwhile, Nakul and Kali also change into good forever. Nakul realizes that he also genuinely loves Kali. He proposes her again but she refuses. She is not able to forget Garv. So, Garv returns to India and helps Nakul win Kali's trust again. He succeeds in doing so, Kali and Nakul marry each other. Kali and Kumud accept each other as sisters. Kumud also decides to marry Kshitij, and she is happy with him, expecting her child. Everything is going well, But then comes a storm in her life. Kshitij dies after falling from a cliff and Kumud has a miscarriage with the news of Kshitij's death. She is shattered. Her life takes a huge turn as another man, Karan Oberoi (Nasir Khan) enters her life. Mahi's misunderstandings are sorted. Kusum (who is again replaced by Shilpa Saklani)and Abhay reconcile with each other. But sadly, Abhay also dies in an accident, which worsens the condition of Kusum and the whole Kapoor family. Meanwhile, Kusum discovers that she has blood cancer and she, too is alive for some days only. Her only last wish is that she wants to see both Kumud and Kali happy. Kali is happy in marital life but Kumud is deeply hurt and unhappy by the demise of her two closely related family members, Kshitij and Abhay respectively. Kusum asks Kumud to marry Karan. She refuses because she thinks that it will hurt Kshitij's soul. She says that she can spend the rest of her life with Kshitij's memories. But due to Kusum's strong insist, Kumud agrees with her. She marries Karan. Initially, Kumud and Karan are not able to cope up with each other but Kumud and Karan gradually fall in love. Kumud is pregnant again. After seeing both Kumud and Kali happy, Kusum dies and gets reunited with her husband, Abhay.
Time lapses by 5 years. Kumud is shown happily living with the Kapoor family and her daughter with Karan, also named as Kusum. In the end, she puts a garland around the pictures of Kusum and Abhay and her second husband, Kshitij. She says that Kusum is dead only for the world. But she believes that Kusum is still around her.
It all began with the tale of a simple girl, Kusum. Many obstacles came along her path but she never lost her hope. She inculcated her same idealistic values in her daughter, Kumud. Kumud also faced a lot of tribulations in her life, from being an unmarried pregnant woman to losing her second husband, Kshitij. But with time, she learnt how to deal with situations like Kkusum. Everything in her life sorted when she found her second love, Karan.
Kusum and Abhay, being each other's soulmate died one after another, only at the gap of a few years. This brings the storyline to a full circle from the start to the end . Kumud names her daughter with Karan, as Kusum. This starts the story of another Kusum: Ek Aam Ladki Ki Kahaani.
