December 1983 lunar eclipse
A penumbral lunar eclipse took place between Monday, December 19 and Tuesday, December 20, 1983, the second of two lunar eclipses in 1983. At the maximum eclipse, 88.903% of the Moon's disk was partially shaded by the Earth, which caused a slight shadow gradient across its disc; this subtle effect may have been visible to careful observers. No part of the Moon was in complete shadow. The eclipse lasted 4 hours, 2 minutes and 20.6 seconds. Occurring only 2.7 days before perigee (Perigee on Thursday, December 22, 1983), the Moon's apparent diameter was 2.7% larger than average.[1]

It was completely visible over eastern Pacific, the Americas, Atlantic, Europe, Africa and western Asia, seen rising over the Pacific and setting over Asia and western Indian Ocean.
