Cyprus Comic Con

Cyprus Comic Con (CCC) is a non-profit multi-genre fan convention held in Nicosia, Cyprus since 2014.[1][2] It focuses on movies, television series, video games, cosplay, comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, Hallyu and collectables.

The first Cyprus Comic Con was held in 2014, and it has since grown to become one of the country's largest and most popular conventions.

The convention includes a variety of activities such as panel discussions, workshops, cosplay contests, and celebrity and artist appearances. Visitors can also peruse exhibitor booths selling comic books, merchandise, and other pop culture-related items. Cyprus Comic Con also hosts smaller events throughout the year, such as movie screenings and gaming tournaments, in addition to the main convention.

Overall, Cyprus Comic Con has grown into a significant event for the local community as well as a gathering place for pop culture enthusiasts in Cyprus and beyond.

History and organization

Cyprus Comic Con is a non-profit organisation composed of five main organisers, nine coordinators and a team of volunteers.[3]

The first Cyprus Comic Con was held in September 2014 at the European University Cyprus with an unexpectedly high attendance of 4,000 which caused overcrowding.[4] Cyprus Comic Con was then moved to Filoxenia Cultural Centre where in August 2015 it doubled its attendance numbers. In September 2016 the convention was expanded to a 2-day event held in the same venue as the year before.[5] Attendance numbers increased yet again, where a change of venue was necessary resulting in Cyprus Comic Con September 2017 being held at the Cyprus State Fair grounds.

In January 2018, the Cyprus Comic Con team announced a change in the annual date of the convention, from September to April which caused the necessary skipping of Cyprus Comic Con 2018, in order to prepare for 2019. Cyprus Comic Con 2019 took place in April 2019 at the Cyprus State Fair grounds in Nicosia.[6]

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the event was put on hiatus for several years, leaving fans eagerly awaiting its return. The organizers have recently announced that the next Cyprus Comic Con event will be held on October 7-8, 2023, at the Cyprus State Fair Grounds, once again.[7]

Exhibits and Features

Cosplay

At Cyprus Comic Con, the Cosplay competitions and parade are popular attractions. Cosplayers demonstrate their creativity and passion for comic book, anime, or video game characters. The winners of CCC's EuroCosplay Qualifiers will be able to represent Cyprus in MCM London Comic Con's EuroCosplay championships.[8]

Craftsmanship awards highlight the creativity of local cosplayers and popular culture trends. The Cosplay Parade is a colorful and vibrant stage not to be missed for those who love costumes, handmade crafts, and transformations.

Gaming

Every year, the Cyprus Comic Con hosts several thrilling gaming tournaments in collaboration with local communities to hold esports involving games such as Hearthstone, League of Legends or Super Smash Bros.[9] The organizers take great pride in providing a platform for these community-centered events. Their aim is to promote the local gaming communities and facilitate connections between organizers, media, and fans.

Artists' Alley

The Artists' Alley is a designated area for professional and semi-professional artists to showcase their work, network with other creative minds and art enthusiasts, create commissioned sketches, and sell prints and other merchandise related to their work.[10]

Visitors looking for a one-of-a-kind, artistic souvenir to take home go to Artists' Alley and look through the diverse range of creative works on display. They can also commission one of the artists to create a custom sketch of their favorite character.

Special Guests

The Cyprus Comic Con event features a diverse lineup of celebrity Special Guests from various fields of pop culture, including film and television actors, comic book artists, professional cosplayers, and musicians. Convention attendees have the opportunity to meet and interact with these guests, obtain autographs and personalized photos, and take selfies with their favorite stars.

In addition, throughout both days of the convention, there will be a variety of panels, workshops, and exclusive interviews with the Special Guests. Attendees should check the comic con schedule ahead of time to ensure they don't miss out on any of these exciting opportunities. The Special Guests are listed later in the article.

The Cyprus Comic Con Film Festival attracts a diverse audience by showcasing the works of local and international filmmakers and animators. It takes pride in promoting these individuals' creative talent and providing them with a platform to showcase their projects.

Film Festival

The festival offers a variety of screenings to suit the tastes of filmgoers. The films chosen represent various popular culture genres, ensuring a diverse selection for the audience. The festival also includes a Film Festival room where attendees can take part in lively panel discussions and interviews with Special Guests, filmmakers, and other creative individuals. The Cyprus Comic Con Film Festival provides an opportunity for filmmakers and animators whose works they believe will appeal to festival attendees.[11]
